OUR GREAT DANE WORKSHOP: GREAT CARE, GREAT DETAIL, AND EXPERT STAFF
Our passion for classic Scandinavian furniture is clearly reflected in the exclusive and sophisticated nature of our collections; however, it’s also evident in our successful development of Australia’s first, and only, Danish furniture restoration workshop …
Located behind our Melbourne showroom and comprising 5 dedicated full-time craftsmen, put simply, our Great Dane Workshop team are unequivocal experts in mid-century classic restorations.
Indeed, their extraordinary passion for timeless Danish design and classic furniture transcends appreciation to verge on obsession: they live it, they love it, and they work tirelessly to help others enjoy it …
Employing centuries-old traditional Scandinavian techniques to maintain design integrity, restore aesthetic quality, and re-imbue the beauty of vintage Danish perfection, our Great Dane workshop prides itself on its attention to detail and takes enormous pride in its work.
From simple repairs to complex restorations, to refinishing treatments, the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm of our in-house craftsmen ensures that authentic integrity, design, and execution are flawlessly maintained at all times.
Here’s how our exclusive workshop process works …
- Regular shipments arrive in our Melbourne showroom from Scandinavia - 5-6 times a year.
- EVERY single piece (big or small) is studied, appraised, and analysed by our Great Dane Workshop Manager.
- Once a piece has been analysed, our Workshop Manager then allocates it to the most suitable Workshop craftsmen for repair, and or, restoration.
- The relevant craftsman then commences a comprehensive, customised rejuvenation process. This process is naturally dependent on the condition of the piece and the scope of work required, but the following procedures are commonly undertaken: restoring structural weaknesses, repairing surface damage, finishing, detailing, and stripping.
And, here’s what our workshop craftsmen do…

Once a piece has been analysed, our craftsmen strip back its old finish, appraise its surface, and select the appropriate products and treatments required.
With the old finish stripped bare, our craftsmen then evaluate the integrity of the wood – which determines if sanding is required, and if so, which grade sandpaper should be used.
Our craftsmen then meticulously examine the piece, highlight ANY imperfections (big or small, prominent or subtle) and reduce/eradicate them with sandpaper – or, in the instance of an indentation … use a hand iron to remove visible pressure marks
Once our craftsmen are satisfied that the piece’s surface is clean and clear, they commence the same fastidious procedures on its frame, legs, and/or understructure.
With the piece now stripped, cleaned, smoothed, and buffed, our craftsmen then start the ‘finishing’ process. This process is critical to maintaining the aesthetic sensibility of our classic pieces, and as such, a variety of different processes are used to suit specific timbers. Because our craftsmen are experts in mid-century Scandinavian furniture design, they know precisely which finishes to use on which woods, and why – a knowledge that can only be earned through years of experience, trial, and error …
